What is Baptism?

As you've already read, we as humans are all sinful. However, our sins have been carried by Jesus, who died for us on the cross. Through His sacrifice, He has                                   given us new life.

Baptism symbolizes that you die to your old life, ruled by sin, and rise into a new life with Christ. In this new life, your sins are forgiven, and you are a new person—made perfect by God. You have overcome sin through Christ, and you will notice that you stand stronger in the fight against temptation.

Repentance

While baptism is a fundamental step in following Jesus, it doesn't happen without repentance. Repentance begins with realizing what your old life entails—a life where you were central, apart from God, and ruled by sin. You consciously turn away from that old life and choose to walk a new path: the path with Jesus.

Repentance means believing in the message of Jesus Christ, accepting Him as your Lord and Savior, and openly confessing this. You choose to follow Him and give Him leadership over your life. A conversation about repentance can be very valuable in this process. It helps you understand what you're saying "yes" to by following Jesus and what you're leaving behind. It's a moment of reflection and surrender.

Be Baptized

If you have decided to leave your old life behind and accept Jesus—who forgives your sins and offers you a new life—then you may take the next step: baptism.

As previously explained, baptism symbolizes dying to your old, sinful nature and rising into a new life with Christ. It is a powerful testimony of your decision to follow Jesus.

Be filled with the Holy Spirit

After your baptism, the journey is not over. God wants to fill you with His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God’s own Spirit who comes to live within you. He brings you to life from the inside out and begins the process of transformation. Through His power, you learn to walk in your new life, receive guidance, strength, comfort, and grow in holiness.

Your baptism is dying to your old nature; the filling with the Spirit is truly becoming alive in God. In this, you become one with the Spirit of God and learn to live more and more in His presence and power.

Hold on to your faith

Now that you have repented, been baptized, and are filled with the Holy Spirit, it is important to hold on to your faith. Life with God is a journey, not a one-time moment. Along the way, you will encounter challenges, but you will also experience great joy and growth.

You hold on to your faith by:

  • Equipping yourself in the faith;

  • Surrounding yourself with believers who encourage you and walk alongside you;

  • And most of all: by continually nurturing your relationship with God through prayer, reading the Bible, and worship.
